Glaucoma

Glaucoma care

Glaucoma damages the optic nerve, often with no symptoms until vision has already narrowed.

We check eye pressure, the nerve and your field of vision, and we repeat those checks over the years. If drops are right for you, we prescribe and review them. If a laser or an operation is the next step, we refer you to a surgeon and see you after.

Who it is for

  • People with a family history of glaucoma

  • Older adults, and people with diabetes

  • Anyone told their eye pressure is high

  • Sudden vision loss, flashes of light, a curtain over your vision, a chemical splash or an eye injury needs care now. Call our office right away or go to an emergency room. If you can't reach us, call 911.

How monitoring works

Each visit takes about an hour, a little less once you have a baseline.

  • 01

    A baseline

Eye pressure, a nerve photograph and a field-of-vision test, so that later visits have something to compare with.

  • 02

    Repeat checks

The same tests on a schedule the doctor sets, so small changes show up.

  • 03

    A plan

Drops, or no treatment yet, and the next visit date. Results vary from person to person.

  • 04

    A referral if needed

When a laser or an operation is the next step, we send you to a surgeon and share your records.

Billing and what to bring

  • How it is billed

Glaucoma visits are medical visits, so they are usually billed to medical insurance. We check your benefits first.

    Which plan pays
  • What to bring

    • Your current glasses

    • Your eye drops, in their bottles or with a list

    • Your insurance cards

    • Records from any other eye doctor, if you have them

  • The doctor who does it

Dr. Sanford leads the glaucoma visits. Dr. Chakrabarty sees glaucoma patients too.

Questions about glaucoma

Can I tell if I have glaucoma?

Usually not. Early glaucoma rarely hurts or blurs your sight, which is why the checks matter.

Do the drops work for everyone?

No. Results vary, and the doctor adjusts the plan at each visit.

Who sees me if I need a laser or an operation?

A surgeon, whom we refer you to. We share your records and see you again afterward.
